The precious nature of this priceless national
treasure
 demanded the same design philosophy and interlock
requirements as a life-safety critical system. FX Control Systems
designed the mechanical system along with the operational and interface
controls. All of these components reside in the vault below the gem and
must function flawlessly even with complete loss of power. FX
also supervised the construction and testing of system.
On verified command the system lifts the diamond to
the display position and begins rotation in 90o
increments. Before displaying the gem, an internal logic control
system verifies that redundant interlocks are properly engaged and the
emergency stow systems are functional. A host of sensors are ever
vigilant for any sign of duress. Should the safety of the diamond be
jeopardized, the gem is stowed and secured behind four inches of armor
in 0.8 seconds. |
